People with a learning disability are significantly less likely to attend breast screening than the general population, and one of the top three causes of avoidable deaths for people with a learning disability is cancer.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we are holding a drop-in event at the Bristol Breast Care Centre for people with a learning disability and their carers to learn about self-examination and breast screening.
Where? Bristol Breast Care Centre (Southmead Hospital).
When? Thursday 17th October 2024 – drop in anytime between 09:30am and 12:30pm.
- Learn about breast self-examination using the anatomical breast models.
- Talk to the breast screening nurses about mammography.
- Look at the equipment used for mammography.
- Talk to the learning disability screening practitioner about what support is available for people with a learning disability for screening.
- Book breast screening appointments if they are due.
- Easy Read resources will be available.
