Abdominal Massage
Abdominal massage may help encourage bowel movement and relieve symptoms of constipation or bloating. Gentle massage can help stimulate the bowel by following the natural direction of the digestive system.
Before You Begin
- Choose a comfortable position lying down or reclining.
- Relax your abdominal muscles.
- Using a small amount of massage oil or lotion may make the massage more comfortable.
- Massage gently and avoid pressing too hard.
How To Perform Abdominal Massage
- Step 1: Stroke upwards on the right side of your abdomen three times.
- Step 2: Stroke across underneath the ribcage towards the left side three times.
- Step 3: Stroke downwards towards the lower left side of the abdomen three times.
- Step 4: Massage in gentle circular motions following the natural direction of the bowel.
- Step 5: Use a palmer kneading motion by alternating circular movements with each hand while moving gradually down the abdomen.
Helpful Tip
Perform the massage for approximately 10–20 minutes each day or as advised by your healthcare professional.
