Recognising and Treating a Hypo

A hypo (low blood sugar) happens when your blood glucose level falls below 4 mmol/L. Knowing the signs and treating it quickly can help you feel better and prevent more serious symptoms.

Signs of Low Blood Sugar

You may be having a hypo if you feel:

  • Shaky
  • Sweaty
  • Tired
  • Worried or anxious

If you experience these symptoms, check your blood sugar level if possible.

If Your Blood Sugar Is Below 4 mmol/L

Choose one of the following quick-acting treatments:

  • 4 large jelly babies
  • 150ml non-diet fizzy drink
  • 200ml smooth orange juice
  • 4–5 glucose tablets

These help raise your blood sugar quickly.

Recheck After 10 Minutes

After taking your treatment:

  1. Wait 10 minutes
  2. Check your blood sugar again

If your blood sugar is still below 4 mmol/L, repeat one of the treatments above.

You may need to repeat this more than once until your blood sugar rises above 4 mmol/L.

Once Your Blood Sugar Has Improved

When your blood sugar is above 4 mmol/L, have something more filling such as:

  • A sandwich
  • A banana

This helps keep your blood sugar stable and reduces the risk of another hypo.

When To Seek Advice

Speak to your GP, Diabetes Nurse, or Healthcare Professional if you are experiencing frequent low blood sugar episodes.

They can review your treatment and help reduce the risk of future hypos.
