Who Is This Service For?
Henderson Rehabilitation Unit provides inpatient rehabilitation for adults who no longer require acute hospital treatment but are not yet ready to return safely to their usual place of residence.
Patients are transferred from hospital to continue their recovery, regain independence and receive additional rehabilitation before returning home or, where appropriate, moving to another care setting.
What We Do
Our aim is to help people recover as much independence as possible following illness, injury or a hospital admission.
Rehabilitation is tailored to each individual and may include:
- Improving mobility and balance
- Relearning everyday activities such as washing, dressing and preparing for daily life
- Building strength, confidence and independence
- Managing ongoing medical needs
- Preparing for a safe return home
Patients receive support from a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation support workers, discharge coordinators, GPs, advanced clinical practitioners and social workers.
What to Expect During Your Stay
Everyone’s rehabilitation journey is different, but during your stay you can expect a personalised programme designed around your individual goals.
During your first few days, our team will complete a number of assessments to understand your rehabilitation needs. Together with you and, where appropriate, your family or carers, we will develop an individual rehabilitation plan that focuses on helping you become as independent as possible. Discharge planning begins early to ensure a smooth transition home.
Throughout your stay, you will be encouraged to take an active role in your recovery by:
- Washing and dressing independently where possible
- Walking and moving safely around the Unit
- Eating meals in the dining room when appropriate
- Taking part in group activities and exercise sessions
- Working towards your personal rehabilitation goals
You will regularly see members of the therapy team for individual or group rehabilitation sessions. Rehabilitation continues throughout the day, with nursing and therapy staff working together to encourage you to practise everyday activities and build confidence.
