What Is Fan Therapy?

Fan therapy is a simple, drug-free way of helping to reduce the feeling of breathlessness.

A handheld fan creates a gentle flow of cool air across your face, which can help make breathing feel easier. Many people naturally seek fresh air when they become breathless, such as standing near an open window or doorway. Fan therapy works in a similar way by providing a portable source of cool air wherever you are.

Fan therapy is intended for people with stable, long-term breathlessness.

If your breathing suddenly becomes worse or you develop new breathlessness, you should seek medical advice from your GP.

Call 999 immediately if your breathlessness is so severe that you cannot speak in full sentences.

How Does Fan Therapy Help?

Research has shown that cooling the face can reduce the sensation of breathlessness.

The cool airflow over your:

  • Cheeks
  • Nose
  • Mouth

sends signals to the brain which can reduce the feeling of being short of breath.

Although it does not treat the underlying lung condition, many people find it helps them feel calmer and breathe more comfortably.

How to Use a Handheld Fan

When you feel breathless:

  1. Sit or stand in a comfortable position.
  2. Hold the fan approximately 15 centimetres (6 inches) from your face.
  3. Aim the airflow towards your nose, mouth and cheeks.
  4. Slowly move the fan from side to side.
  5. Continue until your breathing begins to feel easier.

Some people notice an improvement within a minute, while others may need to use the fan for up to 10 minutes.

When Should I Use Fan Therapy?

You can use your handheld fan whenever you experience breathlessness.

Many people find it helpful to:

  • Carry a fan when out and about
  • Keep one beside the bed
  • Use it during activities that make them breathless
  • Use it whenever symptoms begin

The fan can also be used alongside other breathlessness management techniques.

Other Ways to Reduce Breathlessness

As well as using a handheld fan, some people find relief from:

  • Applying a cool flannel to the face
  • Using a cool water mist spray
  • Opening a window for fresh air
  • Using a desktop or floor-standing fan

Your healthcare professional may also recommend breathing exercises, positioning techniques or relaxation strategies as part of your breathlessness management plan.

Can I Use Fan Therapy with Home Oxygen?

Yes.

If you use oxygen through nasal cannula, you can use a handheld fan at the same time.

If you wear an oxygen face mask, directing the airflow towards your cheeks, neck or upper chest may also help reduce the feeling of breathlessness.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Fan therapy is intended to help manage stable, long-term breathlessness.

Seek medical advice if:

  • Your breathing becomes worse than usual
  • You develop new breathlessness
  • Fan therapy no longer helps manage your symptoms

Call 999 immediately if your breathlessness is so severe that you cannot speak in full sentences.
