Double Voiding Information

Bladder and Bowel Services

What is Double Voiding?

Double voiding is a technique used to help empty your bladder fully.

Your bladder may not empty completely each time you pass urine. This can mean you feel the urge to go again very soon afterwards.

Men may find that sitting on the toilet helps the bladder empty more fully, especially if they feel unsteady when standing.

How To Perform Double Voiding

Women should sit fully on the toilet with their feet well supported. This helps the pelvic floor relax properly. Hovering over the toilet can prevent proper relaxation.

  1. Take your time passing urine.
  2. When finished, squeeze your pelvic floor muscles and then relax.
  3. See if more urine passes.
  4. Stand up and gently wiggle your hips or take a few steps.
  5. Sit back down on the toilet and try again.

Further Tips

  • Lean forward or gently rock backwards and forwards.
  • Try stroking or tapping over the bladder area.
  • Stroking the lower back may help.
  • Whistling or blowing can sometimes encourage urination.
  • Use a small step under your feet to raise your knees slightly.
  • Avoid straining too much.

Some techniques work better for some people than others, so try different methods to find what helps you most.

Remember to relax and take your time when using the toilet.
