Leaflet: Clinical and Spinal Assessment Treatment Services (CATS and SATS)

You have been referred to the Clinical or Spinal Assessment & Treatment Service by your GP for a specialist opinion on the cause of your problem. We are a triage service and aim to offer prompt access for assessment, advice and treatment. This could be of a conservative nature, such as injection therapy, Physiotherapy, exercise, or we may refer you to a Consultant if we feel this is needed. This leaflet tells you what to expect from your assessment.

About your appointment

You may be assessed by either an Extended Scope Practitioner or GP with a Special Interest (GPwSI) in orthopaedics. Please bring appropriate clothing to allow us to fully assess the area e.g. shorts if your problem is with your legs/feet or vest top for arm problems. The assessment may take up to 40 minutes.

Where possible we will explain our diagnosis at the assessment, but we may need to send you for further investigations to support this diagnosis, such as X-rays, scans or blood tests. Some tests may be offered the same day but for others a further appointment will be made for you.

We will discuss treatment options with you and refer to other professional teams such as Physiotherapy where appropriate. If we feel you need further assessment by a Consultant team, we will discuss this with you and offer you a choice on where you would like to go for further treatment.

You have the right to decline treatment at any stage of the assessment or at follow-up sessions, without prejudicing your future care. Your GP will be informed of the outcome of your assessment.

If you would prefer a relative or friend to be the point of contact for you with us, then please let the department know.
