Antiseptic Baths (Milton bleach baths) for the Treatment of Eczema

Helping Reduce Skin Bacteria and Calm Eczema Flare-Ups

Antiseptic baths, often called Milton bleach baths, may help reduce bacteria on the skin that can worsen eczema symptoms. These baths use a highly diluted bleach solution mixed safely into bath water and are commonly recommended for people who experience repeated skin infections alongside eczema.

The treatment may help reduce irritation, calm inflamed skin, and support eczema management when used correctly alongside moisturisers and prescribed treatments.

What Are Antiseptic Baths?

Antiseptic baths use a very weak bleach solution to help reduce bacteria on the skin, including bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA that can sometimes worsen eczema symptoms.

Milton® Sterilising Fluid is commonly recommended because it does not contain perfumes or additional ingredients that may irritate sensitive skin. When properly diluted in bath water, the solution is considered safe and is widely used as part of eczema management plans.

These baths are often referred to as “Milton Baths” because Milton® Sterilising Fluid is the most commonly used product.

Who Can Benefit From Antiseptic Baths?

Antiseptic baths may be recommended for:

  • Children with repeated skin infections
  • People with eczema flare-ups linked to skin bacteria
  • Patients experiencing irritated, inflamed, or infected eczema
  • Individuals needing additional support managing severe eczema symptoms

Your healthcare professional may recommend antiseptic baths as part of a short-term treatment plan.

Possible Side Effects

Most people tolerate antiseptic baths well when prepared correctly, however mild irritation can occasionally occur.

If irritation develops:

  • Rinse the skin with fresh warm water
  • Apply your normal moisturiser or eczema treatment
  • Stop using the baths if irritation becomes severe
  • Speak to your healthcare professional if symptoms worsen

Some people may experience mild dryness or slight irritation around the nose or sensitive areas.

How To Prepare An Antiseptic Bath

Step 1 — Add Milton® Sterilising Fluid

Pour the correct amount of Milton® Sterilising Fluid into the empty bath before adding water.

Step 2 — Fill The Bath

Fill the bath with lukewarm water and ensure the solution is mixed thoroughly.

Step 3 — Soak For 10 Minutes

Allow your child or the person using the bath to soak for approximately 10 minutes.

The whole body should be in the water where possible, but avoid putting the head or neck underwater.

Step 4 — Rinse With Fresh Water

After bathing, rinse the skin using clean warm water rather than bath water.

Step 5 — Dry The Skin Carefully

Pat the skin dry gently using a clean towel. Avoid rubbing the skin as this may increase irritation.

Step 6 — Apply Moisturiser

Apply moisturiser or prescribed eczema treatments immediately after drying the skin.

Step 7 — Repeat As Advised

Antiseptic baths are usually recommended 2–3 times per week unless advised differently by your healthcare professional.

Important Safety Advice

Antiseptic baths should always be prepared carefully and safely.

Please remember:

  • Never apply undiluted bleach directly onto the skin
  • Keep bleach bottles out of reach of children
  • Avoid contact with the eyes
  • Seek urgent medical advice if bleach is swallowed
  • Do not use antiseptic baths if allergic to chlorine
  • Open wounds may sting during bathing
  • Bleach solution may lighten towels or clothing

If you are unsure whether antiseptic baths are suitable, please speak to your healthcare professional before starting treatment.

Helpful Eczema Care Tips

Alongside antiseptic baths, regular eczema care may help improve symptoms and reduce flare-ups.

Helpful advice includes:

  • Continue using emollients regularly
  • Avoid heavily perfumed skin products
  • Keep baths lukewarm rather than hot
  • Moisturise immediately after bathing
  • Avoid scratching where possible
  • Follow prescribed treatment plans carefully
