Care after a Shave Excision

Dermatology Services

Information and aftercare guidance following shave excision skin surgery, including wound care, healing advice, and when to seek help.

What Is A Shave Excision?

Skin Lesion Removal

A shave excision removes the part of a skin lesion that protrudes above the skin surface.

Healing Time

The wound may take around 1–2 weeks to heal.

Scar Appearance

The scar should gradually settle into a flatter, flesh-coloured scar.

Aftercare Matters

Good wound care can help support healing and reduce infection risk.

Wound Care Following Surgery

1: Leave Dressing In Place

Keep the initial dressing on for 24–48 hours unless advised otherwise.

2: Wash The Area

Remove the dressing and gently wash the area using warm water or in the shower.

3: Apply Ointment

Pat the area dry and apply Vaseline or ointment provided by your doctor.

4: Monitor Healing

Contact your GP or NHS 111 if bleeding continues or you have concerns about infection.

Important Advice

  • Press firmly on bleeding wounds for 20 minutes using a clean dressing
  • Avoid repeatedly checking the wound while pressure is applied
  • Mild painkillers may help once anaesthetic wears off
  • Avoid applying make-up until the wound has healed
