Understanding Neck Pain

Neck pain is common and usually improves within a few weeks. Your neck is strong, and natural age-related changes are normal and do not necessarily cause pain.

Managing Neck Pain

The best way to manage neck pain is to keep moving and stay active.

Try to:

  • Change position every 20–30 minutes.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Sit and stand comfortably.
  • Lift safely.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Manage stress.
  • Set up your workstation correctly.

If Your Pain Flares Up

During a flare-up:

  • Keep your neck moving.
  • Stretch gently.
  • Stay active and continue normal activities.
  • Use pain relief if needed.
  • Try heat or cold packs.

Neck Exercises

Simple stretching and strengthening exercises can reduce stiffness and improve movement.

Helpful exercises include:

  • Chin to chest stretch.
  • Side neck stretch.
  • Neck rotation.
  • Chin tucks.
  • Head press.
  • Prone head lift.

When to Get Help

Speak to a healthcare professional if your pain:

  • Is not improving.
  • Stops you carrying out everyday activities.
  • Becomes severe or gets worse.

Seek urgent medical advice if you develop difficulty speaking or swallowing, blurred vision, arm weakness or numbness, fainting, dizziness or vomiting with neck pain.
