Young people across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire are being reminded via a social media video that the school nursing service is available to them during the coronavirus pandemic.

School nurses are offering support to children, any young people and their families via their confidential telephone advice line.

The video features school nurses and young people describing what the service can help with, including: anxiety, sexuality, bereavement as well as drugs and alcohol.

But if a young person has a concern which the school nurses are not themselves able to assist with, they will find someone who can.

Young people can use the confidential service by calling one of three numbers, depending whether they live in Bristol, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire.

The video was made by the school nurses in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire and includes a piece of music composed by Sam Lawrence, an 18-year-old student at Gordano School in Portishead.

Geraldine Bates, Head of Children’s Services, Bristol, Sirona care & health, said: “Whether young people are in school or not, we want them to know their school nurses are still here to help them.

“A school nurse is available on the phone every week day and are here to help as we always have been.”

Chrissie Hardman, Head of Children and Family Health Services, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, Sirona, said: “In light of the coronavirus situation, many of our services have needed to change how we stay in touch with children and young people and their families.

“School nursing is available on the phone and we would encourage any young person in need of support to reach out.

“Even if our school nurses cannot help with the issue being raised they will be able to find someone who can.”
