New stroke services are launching today, as part of a wider local improvement plan that will support people to survive and thrive after stroke.

The changes include:

– A new ‘Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit’ and ‘Acute Stroke Unit’ at Southmead Hospital, providing 24/7 emergency treatment and follow up hospital care for everyone in the area.

– Inpatient rehabilitation, through two new ‘Stroke Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Units’ – including one at South Bristol Community Hospital, run by Sirona, and a further unit at Weston General Hospital.

– Improved community rehabilitation, through our comprehensive Integrated Community Stroke Service. This service is already in place, providing improved support in people’s homes, and includes Life After Stroke services.

Julie Sharma, Interim Chief Executive at Sirona care & health said:

“We’re delighted to have opened two new community stroke services over the last few months, as part of wider plans to improve care for people affected by this serious and debilitating condition.

Through dedicated therapy, specialist support, and activities that promote recovery, our expert teams are ready to help people regain their independence and strength after stroke.”
