Gold standard: Sirona care & health awarded top marks for nurse training programme

By 26th October 2023No Comments

Sirona care & health’s training programme for newly qualified nurses has been awarded gold, the top grade available, by NHS England.

Sirona becomes the first organisation in its area – Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire – to achieve the National Preceptorship for Nursing Gold Quality Mark, placing it among the best in England.

The nurse preceptorship provided by Sirona is the set of training programmes newly qualified nurses (preceptees) undertake in their first year of work after qualifying.

Preceptees are assigned a mentor (preceptor) – an experienced member of staff working in a similar field – and work alongside them to develop their skills and knowledge. In addition, preceptees attend online learning modules, peer support groups and workshops on subjects ranging from clinical practice to safety, confidence to leadership skills, and much more in between.

Preceptees benefit from an allocation of days in which they can work in other teams to broaden their skillset and gain knowledge of other areas of healthcare, helping produce a joined-up and complete package of healthcare for those looked after by Sirona.

Achieving gold means Sirona’s preceptorships meet the highest standards set by NHS England, including extensive, bespoke support and study time for preceptees.

Providing such class-leading support for new nurses helps transition from learner to practitioner as smoothly as possible, enabling them to feel more comfortable and improving their abilities as a healthcare professional.

The news follows NHS England recently presenting Sirona its Work Experience Quality Standard gold award, too.

Keighley Hacking, Sirona’s Education and Student Development Manager, said: “Our education team do an outstanding job ensuring all newly qualified nurses get the very best grounding as they move from learning to practising.

“Not only does this help our staff to develop and grow, but it means the people we look after are getting the best care possible.

“This award is testament not only to our training team’s hard work, but that of all our preceptors and preceptees who are constantly striving to improve their work.”

Mary Lewis, Sirona’s Chief Nursing Officer, said: “Our nurse preceptorship programme has rightly been recognised as among the best in the country.

“Nurses joining us can rest assured they will receive top-quality training, mentorship, and peer support, as well as a welcoming environment in which we do our utmost to help our staff reach their full potential. Having achieved the gold standard in our preceptorships, newly qualified nurses can see Sirona is a great place for them to launch their careers.”
