Sirona is celebrating Adult Learning Disability Week with a range of events and activities from 16-22 June.
Our Adult Learning Disability Health Service (ALDHS) works with people, their families and support workers, to help them to understand and make choices about their health.
On Tuesday 17 June, the team is hosting an online event to enable health professionals to hear real-life stories of people with learning disabilities.
The More Than a Label: Living with a Learning Disability webinar is taking place from 12.30-1.30pm. To take part, sign up here.
On Wednesday 18 June from 1-2pm, the service is holding a webinar to enable carers to find out more about the support available for people with a learning disability with their cancer screening. You can sign up for the free webinar here.
The team is also attending a celebration event at St Paul’s Learning Centre on Thursday from 11am-3pm. This free event has been organised by the West of England Centre for Inclusive Living (WECIL) to celebrate people with learning disabilities and neurodivergence and raise awareness of the support on offer in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
The theme for this year’s Learning Disability Week is ‘Do you see me?’ – to show how important it is to ensure people with a learning disability are seen, heard and valued.
Earlier this year, our Accessibility Team worked with health partners and local authorities to create an easy read dictionary for people with learning disabilities. The project was supported by WECIL, My Community My Community Project and Stepping Stones to Independence.
The dictionary comprises 50 standardised photo symbols which people with lived experience selected to ensure their communication – including leaflets, medical letters and documents – is consistent and more accessible.
These resources are used by health services and organisations to ensure information is accessible to people with learning disabilities.
The team has also been creating easy read leaflets, reports and updating our website to ensure the information we provide is accessible to all.
