How do you support and work alongside your nursing colleagues?
The Inner City & East (ICE) Locality is fast-paced and often unpredictable but an incredibly rewarding place to work.
We serve a highly diverse community, where our nurses regularly care for individuals who experience significant barriers to care such as poverty, social isolation, language differences, mental health needs and substance misuse. This involves our team often navigating complex patients, challenging environments and sometimes high-risk situations.
Despite the challenges and emotional demands of the role, working in the heart of Bristol Inner City is incredibly fulfilling. We support one another as colleagues sharing experiences, offering emotional support, and working as a team to manage the pressures of the role and share the load. Strong relationships have been built not only within our team, but also with our patients and the wider community, which helps us deliver compassionate, effective care.
How does teamwork help promote the rights, expertise, and influence of nurses?
In ICE teamwork is central to everything we do. Our integrated team collaborate closely with colleagues across different disciplines which strengthens the visibility of our nurse’s expertise, ensuring our professional voice is heard. Our nurses play a vital role in advocating for our patients, raising concerns, identifying risks and working together to find solutions. With the knowledge of their patient’s, the local community and the voluntary sector they strive to shape care that meets individual needs. We embrace change together to not only support individuals but also influence and adapt how our service is delivered. Despite the challenges of a small workforce resource in ICE, our team is resilient, innovative, and efficient. Ultimately, strong teamwork empowers our nurses to use their expertise, have a greater influence on care delivery, and enhance the quality of patient care.
Moments that show appreciation, compassion and collaboration within your team
Despite the ongoing pressures and heavy workload, I consistently see our team demonstrating appreciation, compassion, and strong collaboration. Colleagues regularly go above and beyond for patients and each other, and I witness daily acts of kindness, respect, and cultural sensitivity in the care we provide.
Our team responds well to change and the way community nursing continues to evolve; we are seeing an increase in patients with complex needs, and our nurses are committed to developing their skills to help these patients and support themselves to make autonomous clinical decisions.
Overall, these moments of compassion, mutual support, and shared responsibility highlight how we are a team that is adaptable, skilled, and committed, continuously supporting one another to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred care in a challenging but rewarding environment.
