Children’s Bladder and Bowel Service

SERVICE

Who is the service for?

Children and young people, aged 0 to 18 years registered with a GP within Bristol, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire.

For young people and adults (aged 18+) please refer to adult bladder and bowel services.

What we do

We provide assessment, support, advice and treatment recommendations to children and young people with the following issues:

  1. Constipation age 6 months – 17 years.
  2. Daytime wetting age 5-17 years.
  3. Night-time wetting age 5-17 years.
  4. Children with additional needs who have delayed toilet training age 3.5-17 years.
  5. Children and young people with significant medical complexity where they are unable to become continent and are dependent on continence products (age 5-17 years). For example:
    – Children with cerebral palsy Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) IV/V.
    – Children for whom toileting is inappropriate i.e. neuropathic bladder such as spina bifida.

Contact your Health Visitor or School Nurse if you are not sure about which service or resource is best suited to support your child or young person.

Getting help

If your child is experiencing any continence difficulties, please discuss with your child’s GP, Health Visitor, School Nurse or any other health professional working with your child.

Getting more help (more extensive goal-based help)

If your child needs support from the Children’s Bladder and Bowel Service, a healthcare professional (such as a GP, Health Visitor or School Nurse) can refer them into our service.
