Yate Minor Injury Unit (MIU)

Before you use this service, please check below for injuries we are able to treat.

The Minor Injury service is NOT APPROPRIATE for life-threatening injuries or ANY illnesses

The Minor Injury Unit offers treatment for adults, children and young people for a wide range of minor injuries that are less than two weeks old. Attendees will be seen in order of clinical need, this may mean you are not seen in the order in which you arrive.

Please note, the service may need to close earlier than the times stated above if it is experiencing significant demand.

• Sprains and strains
• Cuts and grazes
• Arm, lower leg and foot injuries
• Superficial bites
• Minor burns and scalds
• Minor head injuries
• Eye problems such as scratches, foreign bodies in the eyes
• X-ray service
• Foreign bodies
• Minor injuries in children over 12 months of age

You will be seen by an Emergency Nurse Practitioner, Extended Scope Physiotherapist or an Emergency Care Practitioner who will assess, diagnose and treat your injury. (Please note that this service does not provide a doctor on-site). If your condition is more serious, you will be referred to your GP or an A&E department or to another clinic.

Minor illnesses, such as:

• Sore throats
• Ear aches
• Coughs
• Colds
• Abdominal pains
• Dental pain
• Mental health problems
• Other illnesses – for example chest pain, shortness of breath, or exacerbations of chronic conditions.

We also cannot:

• Redress wounds
• Review wounds
• Remove stitches
• See any injury over two weeks old
• Administer Tetanus injections – please see your GP for this

Please be aware our practitioners are not able to request X-rays of the neck or back, or any imaging of the head.

If you do not meet the criteria please contact your GP, call 111 or consult a pharmacist as appropriate. Individuals booking in with any of the above conditions will be re-directed.

We provide an x-ray service, which is run by North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT).  The x-ray dept within Yate MIU deals with requests from several services, this may mean there is a wait to be x-rayed.

X-ray service opening times:

Monday-Friday: 8am-7.30pm
Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays: 9am-5.45pm

If you have been referred for an x-ray by your GP

There is now an appointment service for all GP x-ray requests. Please call the central x-ray booking line on 0117 4145175 to agree a suitable date and time. The appointment line open 8.45am-4.15pm, Monday-Friday; appointments available Monday to Sunday inclusive.

Alternatively, you can use the x-ray service at Cossham Hospital, which is open Monday to Friday, 8.15am to 4.15pm.

This is a walk-in service. You do not need to make an appointment or call ahead to attend.

If you do not meet the criteria above please contact your GP, call 111 or consultant a pharmacist as appropriate. Individuals attending with any of the above conditions will be re-directed.

Please be aware that our urgent care services are currently experiencing high levels of attendances. Staff are working hard to ensure everyone stays safe, which may mean at times there is a need to restrict access to the Minor Injury Unit.

We ask for your patience at this time and remind you that there is a zero tolerance policy regarding violence and aggression towards our staff.

If we are unable to see you due to capacity levels at the unit, please contact NHS 111. You can also call the unit on 0300 125 6800 prior to attending if you wish to discuss your attendance.

Urgent Treatment Centre on Remedy

Pharmacists can provide expert advice on a variety of common health issues, including coughs, colds, sore throats, ear infections, sunburn, insect bites, and general aches and pains. They sell remedies for numerous conditions, and many can prescribe pain relief, antibiotics and treatments for common illnesses.

They can also support you with information about your medicines—whether it’s how to take them, concerns about side effects, or any other queries you might have. If they’re unable to assist directly, they can refer you to a GP or another healthcare professional.
