Oxygen Machine being adjusted by hands

Who is this service for?

The Community Respiratory Service is made up of health care professionals who specialise in providing services for people with chronic respiratory diseases. This service is available for any adult who is over 18 years, who lives in the Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset area and is registered with a GP from these areas.

What we do

Our Home Oxygen Assessment and Review Service currently provides on going care to people who have home oxygen and live within Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. These people are reviewed either in their own home or within a clinic environment close to their home. Personalised care planning around the management of oxygen is key to the service.

How home oxygen treatment can help

If you have a health condition that causes low levels of oxygen in your blood (hypoxia), you may feel breathless and tired, particularly after walking or coughing. Low oxygen levels can damage the heart or brain.

Breathing air with a higher concentration of oxygen than normal can increase the amount of oxygen in your blood. This makes it easier to carry out activities that might otherwise be more difficult, and it helps reduce the symptoms mentioned above.

Oxygen treatment assessment

People who have oxygen treatment have different requirements. For example, you may only need oxygen treatment for short periods during the day when you’re walking about (ambulatory oxygen), or you may need it for longer periods during the day and night.

Our team of specialist respiratory nurses and physiotherapists will discuss this with you and explain how everything works. We will assess your needs and provide you with ongoing support.

How do I access this service?

Cancelled / missed appointments

If you cannot make your appointment, we require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice to reschedule your appointment – please email us. You may be discharged if you miss any appointments without letting us know, or if you cancel appointments more than once. A discharge letter will be sent to your GP who can re-refer you if they feel this is appropriate.
